We are delighted to announce that we raised over $45,000 in our IndieGogo crowdfunding campaign! Thanks to everyone who has given! That money will go a long way toward building out our new space (see below for a rough mock-up of the new restaurant).
We'll be accepting in-house donations at the Cafe through this Spring, so if you haven't had a chance to support the Sunlight Cafe, come and see us before the big move!
We're moving just around the corner from our current location later this year. It wasn't our first choice to move from the space we've been in for nearly four decades, but it's the move that makes the most sense for our future. We were able to secure a long term lease on a new building at NE 64th St and 9th Ave NE - just west of where we currently are. We have been working with an architect and a contractor to customize the space so that it feels familiar to our customers, while also modernizing the back-of-the-house space for our staff. You can look forward to old-favorites like the wooden booths and bar top, along with new perks like signature cocktails and outdoor bistro seating!
We hope you'll join us at our current spot before we move in a few months and then come again to inaugurate the new space!
With love and gratitude,
Cheryl, Adrian and the Sunlight Family

Meet Cindy, one of our lovely bakers at the Sunlight Cafe. Cindy has been working as a baker at the Sunlight since 1990 and worked here as a barista, a chef, a salad line chef, and prep chef since 1981.
Many of the recipes Cindy bakes with were passed down from the original Sunlight Bakers (Dolly & Lisa!), though Cindy has invented a number herself including the tofu cheesecake, which is vegan and gluten free, our vegan and gluten-free kitchen sink cookie, and our coconut crumb cake. Aside from having many vegan and gluten-free options, we also don't use any refined sugars in our baked goods opting instead for less refined sweeteners such as molasses, honey, and maple syrup.
With a passion for gluten-free baking, Cindy also converted our delicious brownie recipe to be gluten-free, and created our nut crust recipe so that we now carry many gluten-free baked goods.
"I realized people were wanting to go gluten-free, and I, myself don't eat gluten, so I started experimenting."
Cindy's favorite Sunlight food to bake: "Anything chocolate; chocolate cream pie or the fudge brownies... I make them really moist so they're kind of fudgy-like."
Favorite Sunlight dish to eat: "Chocolate cream pie; it's vegan and gluten free."
Cindy sheepishly shared that her friends sometimes call her The Baking Goddess. Although she is somewhat shy with this nickname, we at The Sunlight think no one would disagree with this title.
I interviewed Cindy while she was making our organic 7-grain and whole wheat burger buns; served with our tempeh burger, portobello burger, and of course, our famous Nutburger which can all also be served with our homemade gluten-free cornbread upon request.
Outside of the Sunlight, Cindy raises goats, one of which had a new baby in June, chickens, ducks, and sells eggs to some of the employees at the Sunlight. Cindy also paints, working primarily with watercolors, and is learning how to play piano. She has shown her work at the Sunlight and hopes to do so again in the next year or so. She also sells her greeting cards at Tenzing Momo, an apothecary shop at Pike Place Market.
The Sunlight truly is a family establishment as not only Cindy's sister, but also her four children, and her granddaughter have all worked at the Sunlight over the years or are currently still with us!
Come into the Sunlight and try one of our delicious home baked goods made by Cindy or one of our other fine bakers, Heidi and Laura!
